Dr Louis Marcus
Dr Louis Marcus is a clinical pathologist, with expertise and experience in Chemistry, Microbiology and Haematology, thus enabling her to understand and work in pathology over a wide spectrum. She finds the interaction and interplay of the pathology divisions extremely stimulating.
Dr Marcus obtained her MBChB and her MMed (Clin Path) at the University of Pretoria, and her Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at the University of the Witwatersrand. She joined Pathcare Vermaak in 2010.
She served on the National Human Papillomavirus Advisory Board for many years, and retains an active interest in the prevention of HPV-related malignancies and diseases. Other focus areas are the problem of iron deficiency in the general population, and more recently the challenges of Coronavirus COVID-19 diagnosis. She is involved in the validation of serology tests for COVID-19 diagnosis. Furthermore, she has served on numerous infection control committees, and relates this work to her participation in intensive care consultation.
As education is very close to her heart, Louis Marcus lectures frequently on the above topics to students, registrars and colleagues. She initiated a monthly academic forum at Vermaak and Partners that she has run enthusiastically since its inception in 2010. Furthermore, she frequently publishes newsletters on the latest findings in all the above fields.
