Maureen grew up in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town and studied medicine at Stellenbosch University from where she graduated in 2008.  She enjoyed the lovely Eastern Free State while working in Bethlehem for the next three and a half years. Since 2012 she has been living and working in Bloemfontein where she worked in pediatrics prior to starting her training as a Medical Geneticist. She is currently working as a specialist in Medical Genetics based in Bloemfontein.

Maureen is very passionate about her field and enjoys the variety and complexity of the work. As a medical geneticist she is involved in prenatal cases, pediatrics, adults and cancer genetics. Medical genetics is still an underappreciated specialty, but becoming very important in various fields in medicine. She considers teaching other health professionals about genetics in medicine an important part of her role.
