PathCare is a partnership of pathologists in private practice across South Africa that has been assisting doctors and healthcare professionals determine and confirm diagnoses since 1923. We are registered with the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa) and all our laboratories are SANAS accredited.

An opportunity exists for a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist/Scientist to join the team at our Bemlab agricultural and water testing laboratory in Strand, Cape Town. Bemlab is implementing a new a new project which includes analysing heavy metals in occupational health and clinical specimens.

We are seeking an individual with a proven track record of displaying technical competence in Chemistry and who has a high level of ethics and integrity while consistently aligning with the PathCare values.

Key Competency Requirements

  • Medical Technology Diploma/Bachelor of Health Sciences/BSc Biochemistry Degree or any other related field
  • Current registration with the HPCSA
  • Intermediate computer literacy (Microsoft Office; MS Word, Excel)
  • Must have at least 1-2 years of laboratory experience post qualification
  • Must have experience with basic trouble shooting on instruments
  • Clear understanding of the principles of Chemistry
  • Experience in ICP-MS would be beneficial, however, full training will be provided

  • Must be fluent in English with an understanding of Afrikaans
  • Overtime and weekend work may also be required as per work schedule and requirements and therefore the individual will require his/her own reliable transport.
  • Must have an acceptable track record/performance record with regard to the technical and behavioural competencies required to perform in this position

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain and calibrate the equipment used in the laboratory to ensure that it is operating efficiently and provide accurate results.
  • Recording of instrument maintenance and quality control results.
  • Recognise and resolve problems by troubleshooting malfunctioning equipment and taking corrective action.
  • Train staff where necessary, perform method validations and data evaluations.
