We have updated the PathCare antimicrobial susceptibility data for common community-acquired organisms isolated from patients in the Western Cape province during 2024. There are minimal changes in comparison with the previous surveillance period¹, and current recommendations for empiric antimicrobial therapy for common community-acquired infections remain unchanged. The ongoing rise in resistance among Gram-negative organisms underscores the critical need for diligent antimicrobial stewardship in both hospital and community acquired infections. This trend highlights the importance of identifying high-risk cases, where cultures are necessary to guide and optimize therapy.
